Hasselquist was a student of the renowned Swedish botanist and ecologist Linnaeus. He traveled to Palestine, Syria, Cyprus, Rhodes and Chios to investigate the plants and natural history of the Levant, and he was the first to do so systematically. He died at Smyrna in 1752. His work was edited and published by Linnaeus posthumously in Swedish, as Iter Palaestinum, in 1757.
