This is Rockhill's second trip from Peking, far to the west and south into Tibet at a time when the Chinese were especially suspicious of British travellers coming up from India into Tibet. So Rockhill must have established his friendly credentials from four years residence in Peking. He was a fine American Orientalist (American Travellers Abroad R 49). Near fine green morocco spine with raised bands, flanked by bright gilt lines and a bright gilt title. Green cloth boards with no edge wear. Inside, near fine with no foxing or browning. Very clean and tight. Inscribed and signed to Hon. Harold Sewell with kindest regards. This copy has not been read, as the top edges are uncut in the second half of the book. SCARCE
