Continuation of the title, "Containing Descriptions, Observations, and Comparisons, Made and Collected in the Course of a Short Residence at the Imperial Palace of Yuen-Min-Yuen, and on a Subsequent Journey Through the Country from Pekin to Canton" Still bound, quite remarkably, in contemporary mattled brown calf with raised bands, simple gilt panel decorations, red title and author labels, and a black date label at the bottom of the spine, all with bright gilt letters. The spine is shiny and may have been shellacked. Corners have been repaired so now no edge wear. Crack to the upper outside hinge but the five cords show no sign of loosening. Only the slightest hint of foxing inside, a beautiful copy with all illustrations called for. China was terra incognito at this time, still closed to the outside world with the exception of the Jesuit missions and Marco Polo. Barrow was a keen observor, but gradually less sympathetic to the Chinese culture. This is a cornerstone to any China collection.
