Subtitled, "And Explorations of the Nile Sources". 3/4 dark tan calf with slight wear to the hinges, and more wear to the corners. Marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. No prior owner marks. Inside, very clean and tight, with only a bit of foxing to the preliminary pages. Folding map has some repair to the verso. On the spines of both volumes, raised bands and dark brown title and author labels with bright gilt letters. Finding the sources of the two Niles was the great geographic challenge of this time. Burton and Speke made important contributions, and Baker (with his wife) confirmed Lake Albert as the source of the Nile. Even better, he writes well of his intrepid explorations. He was knighted for his superb accomplishments. A tear in the folding map has been neatly repaired on the verso
