Original blue cloth with gilt framed images of horses and men struggling through deep snow in the mountains on both front covers. Wear at the corners and spine ends. Slight foxing only on the preliminary pages, otherwise very clean. Hinges tight. An handsome set of an important French explorer. Bonvalot traveled from Sararkand to the head of the Oxus in the Pamirs, and descended to the Indus from the Wakhan valley through Masutj in Chitral. A fascinating journey and highly readable. Protected in clear, mylar dust jackets. The French first edition of the same year was one volume, thus thicker and lacked two illustrations that are in the first London edition. Illustrations are evocation of the struggles of a dangerous trip over rugged uncharted mountains, The folding map in color is in fine condition, showing the route of the expedition. .
