Very good original olive green cloth with an American cowboy and an eagle, with a British man and lion on the front cover, and a bright gilt tile also on the front. Spine title has almost entirely worn off although the cloth has not discolored. Slight wear on the edges, and hinges solid. First issue (no mention of later printing on the copyright page). BAL 3434. Very clean inside with no foxing or browning or stains. Gift inscription in pencil from 1875 on the front endpaper. Now protected in a clear, mylar sleeve. Twain had seen a good deal of stuffy, hereditary aristocracy in his long travels in Europe, and lampoons them in a comedy of mistaken identities. Clever and witty, still vintage Twain. Eight pages of publisher ads at the end.
