Original boards covered with well rubbed marbled paper. More recent 20th Century brown leather spine and corners in very good plus condition. Inside the title page and next four pages are covered in a preservative coating, as are the last 4 pages, an appendix. Pages xvii, 76, 136, 181, 9. The text takes the form of letters to his son. Campbell, who formerly commanded a regiment of cavalry in the Service of the Nabob of the Carnatic (in India). His travels took him through Germany to Venice in part one; Alexandria, Aleppo to Mosul in part two, then to Baghdad, Basra, Bombay, shipwreck and capture by Hyder Ali, Candapore, Travanare, Madras and Bengal.
