Volume one covers the Jews, Assyria, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia, India, China, the Mahometans, Spain, Germany, Hungary and Russia. Volume two continues with France, England, Australia, Sweden and Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and a statistical appendix. Stamped elaborate design on full leather boards, with elaborate gilt design of flowers and vines on the spine. Leather worn off at the bottom corner, and the bottom edge of the spine. About ten illustrations, mostly portraits, are uncolored. About one hundred are hand colored scenes or costume plates, only one of which is missing, on page 417 of vol one, peasant costumes. Maarbled page edges and endpapers. First section of text is some loose, but hinges are holding. Minor foxing throughout. The history, although this is a thick book, is once over lightly. Popular, the author hoped, for all its illustrations, and a notable focus on Napoleon, in both France and Egypt. Africa, largely unexplored, is missing. China and India get short shrift.
