Original cloth with gilt turbaned man on the front cover and bright gilt title on the spine. Top edges red. Top edges of spines are a bit frayed. Inside, very clean and tight. This was Burton's first excursion into Africa and almost got him and his party killed. One of 7 volumes in the edition edited by his wife soon after Burton died. Pages xxxv, 209 and (x), 276 plus 3 pages publisher ads. A remarkably clean copy inside and out. See Penzer page 63. One of the best of Burton's books This copy was owned by Col. William Eddy, a fluent Arabist who famously arranged the details and translated for President Roosevelt and King Saud of Saudi Arabia on an American warship in the Red Sea in 1945. That was the beginning of the special relationship of oil and security between the U.S. and Arabia.
