(This variant is not listed in Penzer.) Only a hint of edgewear, raised bands and bright gilt title on the spine, with gilt boxes in the spine panels. Double gilt lines along the outside edges of the boards, with the lines repeated on the inside edges of the boards. All edges gilt. Top edge of one spine is chipped. A newspaper clipping is inserted that explains the gilt from the publisher to the Queen (Victoria) in 1893. One of 7 volumes in the edition edited by his wife soon after Burton died. Pages xxiv, 256 and viii, 305. A remarkably clean copy inside and out. See Penzer page 73. Burton was Consul in Fernando Po when he undertook this diplomatic mission. This copy was owned by Col. William Eddy, a fluent Arabist who famously arranged the details and translated for President Roosevelt and King Saud of Saudi Arabia on an American warship in the Red Sea in 1945. That was the beginning of the special relationship of oil and security between the U.S. and Arabia.
