A large folding map at the end of volume 2. The author recommends a strong China to resist both Russia and Japan. Written just at the end of the Russo-Japan war, with lots of photos from that war, his advice was easier given than executed. Still insightful, given the status of the region a century later. Very good red cloth, bright gilt titles, protected in mylar dustjackets. Page xvi, 548 and xii, 535. Very clean inside, with no prior owner marks. Weale is the nom de plume for Bertram Lenox Simpson, a long term employee of the Chinese Customs Service.
