This is Rockhill's first trip from Peking, subtitled Notes of a Journey Through China, Mongolia and Tibet. He was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution on both trips at a time when the Chinese were especially suspicious of British travellers coming up from India into Tibet. So Rockhill must have established his friendly credentials from four years residence in Peking. He was a fine American Orientalist (American Travellers Abroad R 49). Very good original brown cloth with a leather title label and bright gilt letters on the unfaded spine. Only a hint of edge wear. Inside, near fine with no foxing or browning. Very clean and tight.
